Dr. Oliver M Shannon is researcher and Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Human Nutrition & Ageing within the Human Nutrition & Exercise Research Centre at Newcastle University, UK.

His research explores the impact of nutrients, foods and dietary patterns on cardiometabolic and brain health. This include exploring the impact of whole and juiced fruits and vegetables on markers of health.

He has published >90 peer-reviewed journal articles, including in field-leading journals such as the British Journal of Nutrition and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. His research is funded by UKRI, major charities and industry partners.

It has directly informed, and been cited in, influential reports and guidelines including the 2024 Lancet Commission Dementia Prevention, Intervention & Care Report, British Nutrition Foundation’s 2025 Diet and Dementia Report, and Alzheimer’s Research UK’s public-facing guidelines on dementia prevention. His research has also attracted substantial media attention, featuring in outlets including the BBC, Guardian, CNN and Fox News.

He was the winner of the 2024 Julie Wallace Award for scientific excellence in the field of Nutrition, and he is the Inaugural Chair of the Nutrition Society Early Career Members Section.
